Are You a Follower or a Leader?

Well over 90% of people could be classified as followers. If you are truly happy being one of them, then there is nothing wrong with that. I am certainly not advocating that everyone be a leader. This only becomes a problem when being a follower does not serve you in any way.

I would like to make it clear that we are not totally one or the other. Depending on the circumstances, we can fluctuate between the two. For example, if you are a school teacher then your position automatically puts you in the position as leader. That is what is expected of you by both the School and your students. However, if you are learning a new skill then you become the student and someone else is actually teaching you and they then become your leader, for a certain time.

This is perfectly normal. However, we want to do some self-examination to see if we are always placing ourselves in the role of follower out of laziness, lack of self-confidence or some other reason.

Ask yourself the following five questions:

* Do you feel like you are being held back because of your lack of assertiveness?
* Do you want to speak your mind at times but feel too timid to say anything?
* Do you feel angry that you are letting people make up your mind for you?
* Would you like to be able to stand your own ground when others disagree with you?
* Do you long to break out of your shell and learn to speak your own mind and express yourself well?

If you have answered “yes” to any of the above questions, then you are not happy in the role of a follower. You are certainly not locked into that role for the rest of your life and there are many things you can do to move into the role of a leader.

This is actually a choice that you can make. Go ahead and choose your own destiny, because if you don’t, then someone else will make that choice for you.

Have you ever noticed how you can pick a leader out in a group quite quickly. They seem to talk differently and have an air of self-confidence about them. They are not constantly changing their minds, depending on someone else’s opinion. They are in total control of their thoughts and are not swayed by other people. However, they have the ability to examine the facts and if something new will serve them better, then they can quickly make a decision, take the necessary action and then move on with their lives.

Leaders are not self-absorbed. They have a genuine concern for others and their aim is to somehow improve the lives of those that look up to them.

So if you are not happy with being a follower, then make that choice right now. Get out of your comfort zone and start doing things that a leader would do. There is plenty of room in the World for one more great leader…why not make it you?
