A few years ago I decided that I wanted to work fulltime as a network marketer.  I had been in and out of various different MLM companies over the past 40 years and had never quite achieved the success that I was looking for.

However, I had always had a well paying regular job and I suppose that prevented me from putting everything I had into trying to make a go of it.  I wandered from one opportunity to another, never quite figuring out why I couldn’t get the results that the top earners were getting.

Well, over the last few years I have been taking online marketing very seriously and I have purchased numerous courses, DVDs, CDs and gone to a number of expensive seminars.  What I have learned during this period of time has been priceless but I still felt that there was more that I could be doing to move ahead in my chosen business opportunity.

Everywhere I turned over the last few years, I have been told over and over again that the “old school” way of doing business was dead…..the only way to make it big was to be on the internet and have people coming to you.  Yes, it was all about positioning yourself and having folks chasing you down.

Sounded great….and I bought into it hook, line and sinker.

So what type of results was a getting?  I can tell you that I was not over the moon with happiness.  Yes….I was creating a presence on the web and people were visiting my website but,  in most cases, those visits did not culminate in sales.

What the heck was going on?

After much soul searching and constructive thinking, I made a difficult decision.  I decided that the business opportunity I was in was not the right fit for me.  I was a long time hold out.  I did not want to make a change.  In my mind, it meant that I was giving up.  But the more that I thought about it, the more I realized that I had given this Company more than 100% of my time and efforts and it had not been enough.  I had to figure out why.

After much thought, I realized that I truly was not passionate about the Company or its product.  I still believe that it’s the best product on the market in that arena…..but it was not a subject that I had an affinity for.

So, what was I to do?  I had received much advice from the likes of Bob Proctor, John Assaraf, Napoleon Hill and other deep thinkers and without exception they all said that to be truly successful a person has to be passionate about what they are doing.

I receive regular e-mails from Perry Marshall and one such e-mail arrived just at the right time.  Perry said one of the biggest mistakes a person could make was to stick with something that definitely was not working, after giving it everything you’ve got.

People get confused when they are told that they should never, ever give up.  I felt that if I gave up on my old Company I was a failure.  Well, the truth is that I was not giving up on my dream.  I was being realistic in realizing that this Company was  not the right fit for me and I needed to find out where that would be.

The next step, then, was to find my passion.  Ever since I can remember I have always been interested in health issues and helping others to maintain or regain their health.  I knew I had to find something in the health field that I could feel strongly enough about.   In the past I had been District Manager for Health & Welfare Canada and also received my Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and worked for a while as a Nutritional Consultant and a Master Herbalist.

I needed to find a business and a product that I could relate to on a deep level.  It took a while, but the Law of Attraction never fails to work and as I constantly thought about the type of product I wanted to sell and the type of people I wanted to help, one momentous day, there it was.

I severed my ties with my old Company and joyously aligned myself with a Company and a product that I truly believe everyone on this planet could benefit greatly from.

I could hardly believe it, but in a matter of weeks I was making sales.  I had a product that was desperately needed in the marketplace and all my previous training on marketing etc., was immediately put to good use.

So, if anyone is reading this and feels that they are giving up if they decide that the primary company that they are involved in is not the right fit for them….please relax, sit back and give it some insightful thought.  Ask yourself some important questions.  Here are just two examples:-

(a)      What am I passionate about;

(b)      Is the product I am involved in something that only appeals to a very small percentage of the population;

Doing business is so much easier when you have a product that all the population uses on a daily basis.

I have found such a product and I am thrilled to be able to share it with everyone I come in contact with.

It has been a little while since I have been back from Austin, Texas where I spent a entire weekend with Mike Dillard and his great team.  As part of his Elite Mastermind Group this was the first time we had been together.  Mike split us up into two groups so that he could devote more time to each person exclusively.  Half went in July and I was in the August group.

If you ever have an opportunity to do something like this, please just go for it.  What you will learn will be invaluable.

There were about 18 of us in the Group and Mike took half an hour or so with each person while the rest of us listened.  When it was our turn we could ask Mike whatever we wanted.  He also critiqued our capture pages, sales pages, blogs etc. and gave immediate feedback on what we needed to do to improve them.  Naturally, this was a highlight for each of us.

However, it was equally as productive for us to listen to the feedback he was giving to everyone else.  There would be questions that you had forgotten to ask that someone else would ask and the entire group then benefited.

There were people involved in various different types of businesses….but what Mike was teaching covered the entire spectrum.

It was at this Elite Mastermind Event that I made the decision to change companies.  My passion has always been health and the company I was in at the time dealt with financial education.  There is no question that it’s an area that is extremely important, especially in this day and age but my heart was more attuned to the health field as opposed to the financial field.

So I made the change.  Now the wonderful thing about doing something like that is when you follow Mike’s teaching,  it’s really all about you.  People are wanting to do business with you and not your company or product.  So if you get everything set us as Mike shows us to do in Traffic Formula 2 then making a switch in companies is not going to be a big deal.

You will hear many people say that it doesn’t matter what the product is….it’s all about the marketing.  I disagree with that opinion.  I truly believe that if the product is not something that people really need and want, then you are making life and your business much harder that it needs to be.

You are definitely going to be more successful selling a product that has wonderful benefits for just about everyone.  Really….that’s a marketers dream come true.

Initially you will probably have enough time to perform all the necessary tasks involved in setting up your own home-based business. There is usually quite a learning curve and you will proceed rather cautiously. This can be quite a slow process. However, you eventually get to the stage where your website it up and running, you have posted a number of videos to YouTube, you are interacting on Twitter and Facebook and you might even be writing the occasional article.

As you add additional activities so as to develop leads for your business, you begin to find that there are not enough hours in the day to perform all the functions regularly and efficiently.

For instance, you might wish to write a few articles a week, but find that the amount of time spent in researching your subject and then actually writing those articles is very time consuming. Maybe this is taking up so much of your time, that you are neglecting posting to your blog or networking on the social sites.

So what is the answer? Obviously, there are only so many hours in a day. The question is, how best to spend that time.

First of all, you would want to examine the effectiveness of what you are already doing. Are your articles bringing in leads and are they getting you great Google placements? If they are, then your time would seem to be well spent on your article writing. On the other hand, if you are spending a huge amount of time writing your articles and they are not getting many viewings, perhaps you should consider outsourcing this portion of your business. Perhaps you have been working for weeks or even months, on trying to get a website up and running. You are trying to do your own capture pages but they still don’t look very professional. Just think of all the time you might have wasted trying to get a website up and running by yourself. If you had outsourced this, you would have had the website out there working for you for the last number of months. You want your pages to look professional and it is very difficult for a beginner to create and optimize a webpage effectively. Spending your money in this area is definitely money well spent. Ask around for references and check out the work that the designer has done for other people. There are many styles and formats available and you will like some more than others.

Sometimes, we have the mentality that we have to do everything ourselves or we are not genuine. This is very faulty thinking. The majority of successful internet marketers outsource a good portion of their work. The big decision that you have to make is deciding what your strengths and weaknesses are. Once you are clear on this, it becomes relatively easy to decide what you want to outsource. Don’t try to be an expert at everything. It will not work.

The success you are looking for will be achieved much quicker if you outsource those things that you are either not good at or that you take no pleasure in doing. You will wonder why you did not start to outsource long before now!

• UNIQUE PRODUCTS What factors go into making a product unique? First of all, there is no point in marketing a product that only a small percentage of the people are interested in. It has to be a product that will appeal to the masses. You would also want it to serve a few different market categories so that you don’t get saturated in any one area. It is also wise to go with a patented product, so that it cannot be easily copied.
• SUPPORT NETWORK As a new person in the Company, you don’t want to be treading water, so to speak. Check into the training program that the Company provides. There should be no cost to you for this training and it should prepare you well for doing the business successfully. The Company should also keep you well informed of any changes in the marketplace so that you can make the necessary adjustments quickly.
• SOLID MARKETING SYSTEM It’s a sad fact, but most Companies, regardless of how good they are, have less than stellar marketing systems. When this happens the burden falls upon the sponsor. What kind of results are they getting….and if they are successful, can their downline actually duplicate their results? Remember, the average person must be able to do this. If they see their sponsor as being someone with genius capabilities, they might feel very inadequate about duplicating their efforts. So the Company has be provide a marketing system that practically runs itself.
• QUALITY AND SOLID COMPANY MANAGEMENT It is highly recommended that you check out the founders of the Company and the people at the top. Is the Company run by intelligent leaders? Research their plans for the future. What is their vision?
• GLOBAL REACH These days business is conducted on the internet on a worldwide scale. You have to ask the question….can the product line expand to other countries? Obviously, many products have no use at all in other countries. You need a product that not only appeals to people internationally but that will also work just as successfully for them where they happen to live.
• COMPENSATION PLAN & INCENTIVES Many people are so enthusiastic about the product that they spend very little time examining the compensation plan. This is a huge mistake. For instance, let’s take two companies with very similar products and let’s say that your goal is to make $5,000.00 a month. One Company might require 200 people to reach that level of earnings, while the other Company requires 1000 people. Once you are armed with this type of information, you are in a much better position to make an informed decision as to which Company to sign up with.
• COMPANY PHILOSOPHY - DO THEY GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY The Law of Abundance states that there is more than enough of everything to go around. Does this Company exhibit that philosophy with philanthropical works. If they do not, then they are likely to be less than giving when it comes to dealing with their associates.

Donald Trump, Robert Kiyosaki and Paul Zane Pilzer have gone on record as saying that more millionaires are going to be created during the next ten years than ever before in history. If you want to be one of them and you want to accomplish this by joining an MLM or Network Marketing company, then I highly recommend that you pay close attention to these seven things you should look for when choosing a company.

There is no question that it can be very beneficial to optimize our websites so as to bring us much appreciated free and targeted traffic.  The alternative would be to attract traffic using pay-per-click.  I am sure we would all choose the free traffic over the paid.  However, therein lies the danger.  Many become too dependent on SEO for their traffic and when the search engines decide to make major changes with their algorithms, we sometimes see our free traffic go out the window, so to speak.

That being said, SEO, in my estimation is still a very worthwhile skill to develop.  Many think that this is something that is very difficult to learn, but in my experience I have found it to be more straightforward than coming to grips with all the intricacies of pay-per-click.   Even when I first started out, it took very little effort on my part, in all instances,  to reach the first page of Google with my articles.  The first time it happened I thought it must be a fluke, but then it happened again and again.  I then realized that the little I did know about SEO was sufficient to get me on page one of Google each and every time.

Like other beginners to internet marketing, I thought that there were well guarded secrets to ranking well on Google.  Little did I know back then, how easy it would be and without having to take any courses.  There is so much free information available on the internet that you can be trained and ready to go in no time at all.  I found that doing a search on YouTube often produced what I was looking for.  For me personally, I learned quicker when I could actually watch an instructional video on the subject.

I do, however, recommend that you always have a few back-up systems in place.  After all, if you do get caught in a major algorithm change you could lose all your traffic overnight.  As mentioned, pay-per-click would be one.  Another alternative is to be an affiliate for other companies and products.  It is free to register with Clickbank and you can be up and running with very little effort on your part.

You might also consider creating a product of your own….for instance, an E-Book.  You could list this on Clickbank and have other affiliates sell your product for you.  There’s lots of free training on how to be a successful affiliate marketer.

So, you don’t have to rely entirely on search engine optimization to get high rankings on Google or the other search engines.  For me personally, it is still my favorite way to easily rank.  However, I am aware that things could change very quickly, so I have involved myself in some alternatives.

So is SEO the powerhouse it used to be?  I believe it is.  Yes, there might be tweaks to it in the future, but if it’s free traffic you are looking for then I highly recommend you learn everything you need to know about SEO.

Perhaps this is the first time you have started a business of your own.  You have chosen your domain name and you have aligned yourself with a Company or a particular product.  People have told you that all you have to do now is sit back and watch the money roll in.  To your great surprise, nothing much happens.  If we just take a step back and examine this for a second, it becomes obvious that if it was that easy, everyone would be doing it.

I don’t want to discourage you though, because this is probably the best way for you to make money.  The likes of Donald Trump and Paul Zane Pilzer have gone on record as stating that during the next ten years, there are going to be more millionaires created than at any other time in history.  Not only that, but these millionaires, for the most part, are going to be self-employed people who are conducting their businesses through internet marketing.  So there’s the good news.

It is naive to think that a business can become successful without much effort on the part of the owner.  To begin with, there is so much that has to be learned about basic internet marketing skills and concepts.  I highly recommend that you take the time to really familiarize yourself with learning these skills and building a foundation of knowledge.

The desire to make money on line very quickly leads a person to jump from one opportunity to another.  When one doesn’t work out immediately for them, then they go searching for the next best thing!!  This is definitely not going to get you anywhere.  Do your research initially and then choose the company or product that you feel most in tune with and then stick with it.  Understand that you are in this for the long haul.

You can waste so much of your time by making a rash choice.  There are literally thousand of opportunities out there and the many online scam artists are just waiting to get their hooks into you, if you just let them.  Don’t be discouraged however, because there are some wonderful oppotunities and when you find the one that resonates with you, give it your very best effort.  Learn all you can about working your business online.  Don’t be afraid to ask question after question.  You will find that you are slow at some of the technical things at first but the more you do it, the easier it will get.  It’s absolutely true that practice makes perfect.

When you know that you have made the right choice then learn, learn, learn and never give up.  Those 95% of people who give up were quite often just moments away from breaking through.  If you know that you are doing all the right things, then it is just a matter of time.  Don’t forget…Rome wasn’t built in a day.

So you have decided to go ahead and start your own business.  Let me be the first to congratulate you, but also let me be the first to warn you about jumping into choosing a name that is not a good fit for either you or the business you have chosen.

One very important thing to remember is that once you have registered your domain name and you have set up your website, started advertising and getting leads coming in…at that stage of the game it’s already too late to make a domain name change very easily if you realize you have made a poor decision.  It would mean starting all over again.  So, let’s see how we can avoid that scenario.

Here are five mistakes that people often make when picking their domain:

• THE DOMAIN NAME HAS VERY LITTLE RELEVANCE TO YOUR BUSINESS. This is a very serious mistake because when prospects reach your website and you are not providing them with the information they are expecting, then they are going to quickly leave your site, never to return again.  You want to choose a name that will immediately tell your prospect something about your business and what they can expect when they visit your website.
• THEY DO NOT CHOOSE THEIR OWN PERSONAL NAME. If you are interested in building a reputation for yourself on the internet, then it is a very good idea to purchase your own personal name as soon as possible.  You might not use it immediately, but if you do become very successful, you might find that someone else has purchased your name so that they can capitalize on your success.  I have actually seen this happen with a very famous internet marketer.  He was not able to get his personal name without adding a tag to it.
• THEY CHOOSE DOMAINS THAT ARE CONFUSING. You want your domain name to be easily understood.  If you are reciting the website address to someone over the phone, you want them to be able to write it down without you having to go over it a number of times for them.  For instance, if your site was ‘help4you.com’ that could be confusing.  Some people might type in ‘helpforyou.com’.  It is best to stay away from using numbers that could also be words.
• THEY PUT DASHES IN BETWEEN THE WORDS IN THEIR DOMAIN NAME. You want to choose a name that is easy to type.  If you are like me, you find typing in website addresses with dashes to be an annoyance.  You want people to be able to reach you easily and dashes just don’t cut it!
• THEY DON’T CHOOSE A DOMAIN NAME WITH LASTING POWER. You need to choose a domain that will serve you for the long haul.    There is no point in getting a “fad” name that will lose it’s meaning in the near future.  This name is going to represent you and your business so choose one that you are going to be comfortable with for many years to come.

Well, there you have it.  Have fun brainstorming for your perfect domain name.  If you come up with a few that you just love and that are still available, I advise you to go ahead and get them.  You don’t have to do anything with them right now.  Many people have been very disappointed when they returned later to purchase a particular domain name, only to find that in the meantime it had been taken.  Don’t be disappointed…grab that name, if it’s a good one.

Your domain name is like a snapshot of you…make sure it depicts you in a favourable light.

There are so many aspects to doing business on the internet that you will want to decide a few areas that you would like to specialize in.  For instance, you could choose to write articles and do videos.  If that was the case, then you would want to find yourself a mentor who was experienced in teaching article writing and a mentor who taught the ins and outs of doing an effective video.  These people are definitely out there…I have used them myself.

Don’t fall into the trap of using just one person for all things.  No one is great at everything.  When you do end up with a short list of mentors, do your research on them personally.  Check out testimonials about them.  Do these testimonials sound genuine to you?

If you do go ahead and sign up with a mentor or two, make sure you check out their guarantee first.  It has been my experience that the better gurus always offer a money back guarantee which can run anywhere from 30 days to even one whole year.  It is really true when they say “what have you got to lose”.  There is such a vast amount of education out there for a reasonable price, that you can be educated and making money on line in no time at all.

With the state of the World economy these days, more and more people are considering starting their own home based business and for the most part, that would involve internet marketing.

The idea of reaching millions of people with your product or information is very exciting but the truth of the matter is, internet marketing is not a walk in the park.  Even for people who have had years of business experience in the corporate world, this is a whole new ball game.  A great deal of time, money and resources can be wasted if you do not have the proper direction and you will definitely not be producing the results that you hoped for.

My personal advice is to find yourself a mentor.  There are many to choose from and each one has something a little different to offer.  Not only that, the cost can vary significantly.  You do not have to spend thousands of dollars to receive a good education.  Many of these internet gurus give advice and training up front for free or for a very nominal fee.  Find one, or preferably two, that you feel a connection with and check out what they have to offer.
